A Diastema is a wide gap that separates rows of teeth.

In plant-eating mammals, the diastema separates the biting teeth at the front of the jaw, from the chewing teeth at the rear.

In many rodents, the cheeks can be folded into the diastema to shut off the back of the mouth while the animal is gnawing.
