Elytron


The Elytra of this Cockchafer are easily distinguished from the hindwings.

An Elytron is a hardened forewing found in beetles, earwigs and some true bugs.


The pair of Elytra usually fit together to form a case and they protect the more delicate hindwings underneath.


In some insects they are fused together, rendering them flightless, ground beetles are a good example of this.
