The Nictitating Membrane of a chicken


The Nictitating Membrane is a transparent or translucent third eyelid, present in some animals, that can be drawn sideways across the eye for protection and to moisten the eye while maintaining visibility.


Nictitating membranes are found in birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and a few mammals.
