A Barbel is a slender, whisker-like, tactile organ near the mouth.


Many bottom dwelling fish have barbels such as catfish, carp, goatfish, sturgeon and some species of shark.


They house the taste buds of such fish and are used to search for food hidden in gravel, mud and murky water.
